School Programs

After School Education and Safety Program (ASES)
The mission of Modesto City Schools' After School Education and Safety program is to provide a safe, nurturing, academically enriching and productive after school learning environment which will empower students to become outstanding individual achievers and positive citizens. ASES program operates from the end of the school day until 6:00 p.m. Our after school program provides a safe, positive environment where children receive academic instruction and assistance with homework, participate in a wide variety of recreational and enrichment activities, and make friends!

The ASES Program is FREE of charge and is open to first through sixth grade Wilson students!

Mighty Milers!
Students at Wilson Elementary had the opportunity to join the Might Milers. These students worked hard after school, exercising and training to run a 5K!

Gallo Mentor Program
Thanks to our fifty plus Gallo Mentors, Wilson is home to the longest running mentorship program in the District. This year will be our 18th year celebrating our successful mentorship program. A minimum of once per week, Gallo professionals come to our site to assist our students. You can find a Gallo mentor playing hoops, tutoring or simply speaking to his/her mentor.

Academic Family Nights
There are many changes related to education this school year. One major shift is the full implementation of Common Core State Standards. Therefore, Wilson will be hosting parent informational nights throughout the school year focusing on these new standards...World Series ELA, Science Super Bowl, Mathematic March Madness. Associated Student Body
Beginning the first week of September, 2014, interested Wilson students will begin campaigning for one of four ASB Positions, President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Grades 4th-6th may run for an elected officer position. Teacher advisor: Ms. Puscizna 

Baseball Team
Wilson has participated in the MCS baseball program for three years. If your son/daughter is interested, please be on the lookout for information beginning January, 2016.  Baseball advisor:  Miguel Vargas

Chorus
Wilson chorus meets approximately twice per month during the morning recess time. You need not have a "perfect" voice to join. The only requirement is to enjoy singing. Throughout the school year the chorus club will travel to retirement homes to sing to the occupants as well as participate in MCS sponsored activities. This is long standing club with a very rich tradition. Teacher advisor: Ms. Cowell and her father volunteer, Mr. Henry.

Community Hospice Tweens and Hugs Grief Groups
If a child has experienced loss through death, divorce or abandonment the professionals at Community Hospice are here to help. Free of charge is high quality group counseling that may assist in the grieving process. These groups are held during the lunch time hour at Wilson.

Computer Literacy Program
Every week Wilson students participate in a computer literacy program for a total of an hour of instruction. These sessions are lead by a certificated teacher. Student lessons range from basic keyboarding to construction of Excel documents and Power Point presentations.

Counseling Services and Student Assistance Specialist
The Center for Human Resources has provided Wilson with a full-time Marriage and Family Therapist. To be referred for counseling services, Wilson students must have Medi-cal as well as a fully participating parent. MFT: Ms. Chapman. Wilson also has a two day per week Student Assistance Specialist. This person can assist any Wilson student who is having mental health issues. Parent permission is required. The SAS can speak to individuals or groups for a maximum of eight sessions.

Daily Enrichment, Intervention and English Language Development
Everyday from 10:20 am-10:50 am, Wilson students receive enrichment, intervention or English Language Development, depending on their particular needs. This is a time of strategic teaching where students are specifically serviced according to what they need to become proficient readers and thinkers. All teachers and support staff participate.

End of Trimester Student Recognition Awards
At the conclusion of every trimester students are recognized for their academic achievements and citizenship. Parents will be notified via letter from the student's teacher if their child is to receive an award. This is a very special time celebrating students who have worked hard inside and outside of the classroom. Parents are encouraged to attend! The afternoon assemblies are broken into grade levels: K-1, 2-3, 4-6. Please check out the above calendar for the exact dates.

Garden Club
Thanks to the Comcast Cares Grant, Wilson has several beautiful gardens that are maintained by our Garden Club. Teacher advisor: Ms. Puscizna.

Instrumental Music
Fifth and sixth grade students have the opportunity to participate in MCS Instrumental Music program. Lessons occur on Mondays and Fridays from 1:00-2:40, depending on the instrument. Twice per year, Instrumental Music students participate in a program where they get share their music with their families and other schools. Teachers: Mr. Chavez and Ms. Greer

Jaguar Jams (Parent Meet and Greets)
Once per month, parents are invited to Wilson to spend some time with the principal. These meetings take place on Fridays from 8:30 am-10:00 am. The principal will cover hot topics in education, take time for questions and speak of various initiates that impact the community. Please link to the above calendar for more information.

Monthly Attendance Student Recognition Awards
Every month students are recognized for their attendance accomplishments. The principal will personally recognize all students with perfect attendance for the month. These events are done inside of the classroom and are scheduled on the above calendar. When students have perfect attendance for the entire year, their names are placed into a raffle for prizes at the end of the year.

Partnerships with Feeder High Schools (Pumpkin Relays & Punt, Pass, Kick)
Downey and Johansen High Schools have partnered with Wilson Elementary School for several events. This school year, they will be invited to assist with lunch time activities such as Pumpkin Relays during the month of October and Punt, Pass & Kick contests during the time of the Super Bowl. These special events promote positive behavior in our students. Furthermore, they will be asked to participate in read-alouds for our younger Jaguars.

Peacebuilders
Wilson is proud to be a PeaceBuilders School and is dedicated to creating a community that strives to transform a culture into one which is cooperative, productive, and academically successful. Every month teachers are asked to teach a lesson aimed at one Peacebuilder quality.

Positive Behavioral Intervention Support Team
Parents, teachers, support staff and students are encouraged to join Wilson's PBIS Team. Once a month, important school stakeholders meet to discuss pressing issues related to promoting positive behavior and interventions aimed to help students succeed both inside and outside of the school setting. This year we will be developing a specialized PBIS program for Wilson students. See the above calendar for specific dates and times.

PTA
Wilson's Parent Teacher Association has many events planned for this upcoming school year. All of Wilson's Field Trips are funded through our wonderful PTA. Participation is strongly encouraged. New to Wilson this year will be a fall car wash fundraiser and a spring carnival. Be on the lookout for these important events. Recycling Counts
Wilson is an eco-friendly school. Almost everything we see around us can be recycled and Wilson is dedicated to the recycling cause. Ms. Martinez's class spearheads our Wilson recycling efforts.

STEM Club (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education must be a priority. Our nations's economic prosperity is closely linked to student success in these fields. Wilson has a STEM Club that allows students to tap into all of these fields. Teacher advisor: Ms. Puscizna.


Traffic Patrol
Wilson offers traffic patrol to interested fifth and sixth graders who can work hard both inside and outside of the classroom. Traffic patrollers must have parent and teacher permission prior to participation. Traffic patrollers learn responsibility and the value of collaboration. Wilson Family Room (school-wide cross aged mentoring)
Four times per year various Wilson students will combine for an activity to be shared amongst their "WILSON FAMILY." Wilson families consist of one student per grade level. The purpose of the Wilson Family Room is to promote Wilson as more than a school but as family members. This time allows older students to develop a mentorship-type of relationship with some of our younger Jaguars.
